imagine a self healing skin, the residual status of the cup impossible to suppress, even in the presence of a claw hammer. the imperfect fracture reinforcing the understated sensuality of handle. the sensuality and the teacup has been well documented, merret oppenheimís piece offers an Art take, where connoted experience is only imagined in the mind of the viewer, this demands a different frame and in some respect, the imagined experience is by far a stronger sentiment which can never be matched by the real.
the project proposed is a hybrid between the former, a complete object and the celebration of absence, the memory. it offers a new form in the provision of a redefined function with emphasis on the domestic tensions as found between mug, cup and handle. we can ask, has the original function been derailed by a new emotional demand and with this softening of form, we may ask, at what point do we decide that a domestic artefact is recognized as defunkt? that is, damaged and beyond acceptable use. yet the cup remains saveable, a positive symbol of recovery and recycled materiality, where each fractured piece, distanced from itís original and ideal model-type now occupies the new found status of the unique object, with itís characteristic generated by the violence of a controlled creative gesture or the possible creative opportunism of a simple domestic accident.
the handle, an emblem of a previous tired format, an etiquette, long out-moded and through the apparent dissolve of class, it has no longer a valid code, as a consequence, the components necessity is reduced over decades by itís inherent cultural DNA to a irregular lump, a memory of a previous state, much akin to a redundant pad found on the legs of the domesticated dog.
