bench conceived by many fathers <13>

An internal fnklab memo from the period by stokes to fix read…this project, bench conceived by many fathers <13> was the focal point to the re_modelling of the metropole’s school of architecture. A critical space in the dissemination of knowledge…a performance space and lecture space. the design remit was to design a simple lectern, however, the scale of the context dictated a response which was in a sense theatrical and over_scaled. the scale of the intervention gave greater possibility for a speaker/performer to interact with the object, allowing the possibility for a professor to explore methods of presentation beyond their conventional code of practice, which for some had remained static since the optimism of post war new found composite technologies. The piece was designed in such a manner to withstand the weight of a lecture in full flight. a conceptual driver for the formal qualities of the bench was to use the lectern to demonstrate fundamental principles of architecture namely, The Fibonacci, structure: a cantilever, technological and material semiotics, all were prevalent elements within my outline objectives. And such proposals will be wrapped within a framework of the performance of both Man and machine. the bench was serviced through a central spine of invisible technology where all cables apart from the power cable from the wall were hidden and contained within an elliptical 3D lozenge. A classic marriage of complex curve and the rectilinear and if a visual representation of this deliberate manifesto was sought, then one should look no further than the painting by francis picabia, Fille née sans mère [Girl Born without a Mother] about 1916 – 1917.

the understated proposal was to offer the 3D construct as a piece of visual relief and wonderment as an alternative to a potentially drab lecture.
